Linux has become a serious alternative for a number of users but it generally takes more PC skill than Windows users usually have. However for the modest learning curve the user gets a platform that is very stable, very reliable and far more secure than Windows. For those willing to make a little effort the payback is enormous as the OS is free, performs very well, is more customizable to user's preferences, is far more secure than Windows and can be installed on as many PC's as they like for free.

There's less effort with Linux than with windoze nowadays. A Linux install is all done in 20 minutes, with either no reboots or a single one, unlike the multiple, painful process on windoze7. And no hours of updates to afterward, and no need to get anti-virus running (although you should, just to avoid passing on bad things to windoze Lusers). SuSE or Ubuntu or Mint, to name but 3, are simple to install and use.

You're forgetting that Android, which comes with three out of four smartphones, is Linux. Also forgetting that the New York Stock Exchange is based on Linux, as are increasing numbers of other exchanges; and that more than 90% of the world's top 500 supercomputers run Linux; and that Google bases all its operations on Linux; and that Facebook is based on Linux; and that Yahoo is based on Linux.
