simple math question rewritten so some of the dimmer can understand it

    Let me rephrase the question.

given a list of measurements for a single quantity which strategy provides the most likely best estimate of the true value.
    1 Averaging the measurements
2 Averaging the measurements then applying the rules of significant digits to the average

Which answer is most likely closer to the true answer ??

    Maybe an example would help.
If a civil engunear weighed his collection of pet rocks every day for five days for a graduate lab course in rock weighing which value should he report to his perfessur for the weight of his rock collection.

A pick the number he likes cause its purty.
B Average the weights he recorded and report this.
C Apply the rules of significant digits to the average from B and report this.
D Any other option for the 5 readings

    Sentiment: Sell
