An effective gun law that will help over time

Starting next year have gun safety classes mandatory for prospective owners under 25 and have that step up every year until at some point anyone wanting to own a gun for the first time must pass a gun class.

I grew up around a lot of guns but to go on a Western hunt 20 years ago I had to take a gun safety class to obtain a license to hunt there. I was astounded that I was the sole person who could answer the question as to "what is the first thing to do as you pick up a gun".

The class required that each participant shoot rifles, pistols, shotguns, black powder guns, and bow and arrows.

Too many people buy guns who have no business with them, they are not locked up or otherwise secured. They are unaware they can go to jail if a kid accidentally shoots himself or even think about that happening. Even my quick response home protection auto has the gun unloaded and the magazines in a separate location. It's a price I am willing to pay in time lost to prevent a tragedy.

Gun safety was taught in schools in some locations years ago and we had far less gun crime then.

Time would tell how much, but it would help. Solving the problem is not, I fear, the goal of the current group (or at least a number of them).
