The amount of the EU fine will not significantly affect MSFT financials and will probabaly be reduced in subsequent negotiations. Nevertheless, it clearly shows that MSFT needs to pay better attention to operating details. Senior management bonuses should be cut as a result of this failure.
The fine does matter. It perpetrates the mistaken wide spread belief that MSFT cannot do anything right. EU may be acting in bad faith, but MSFT signed a document agreeing to the restrictions. They are now being held accountable for violating the agreement. This is not the first time MSFT has been fined. The total fines are approaching $2 billion dollars. Also there is a report circulating that MSFT owes back taxes in another European country. It is inappropriate to use a Holiday Party expense hyperbole to justify their inattention to detail. MSFT senior management should be held accountable through reduced bonuses.
