    • MSFT has 11% of the tablet market in Italy already.

    • It is a huge story and statistic that has MSFT shorters in a panic. Microsoft's rise is inevitable now and those that are shorting it are going to lose a lot of money. One can already see their pathetic cries and yelps at this message board. It's the sound of fear in their gut about how much money they are going to lose betting against Microsoft. Let them scream. I love it. Go Microsoft!

      Sentiment: Strong Buy

    • Yes it's very impressive to come out of nowhere & get that kind of traction in such a short time period,I think MSFT is going to do with the Surface line the same thing they did with XBOX.

why it nowhere when msft invent tablet?

        10 year short time?

you nowhere now. in 10 year you dominate nowhere?

      • Yeah, right wally...the XBOX has lost M$ nearly $3 billion in 10 years. The rubbish tablets should emulate that....

Even as rumors have begun about the possible 2013 launch of the successors to the Xbox 360 and the Playstation 3, there's lots of talk that these products could the final game consoles ever made. Today, a game developer claims that Microsoft and Sony have already lots a ton of money on the current generation of game consoles.

Ben Cousins, a game developer who has worked at EA, Sony and other studios, currently works at Scattered Entertainment, which is making a first person shooter for the iOS platform. In a Kotaku article, he states that game consoles are sold at a loss so companies such as Microsoft can get the money back via license fees from each game that are sold on their systems. He shows, via Microsoft's own financial numbers. that the Xbox division has lost close to $3 billion in the last 10 fiscal years. Sony's gaming division lost even more money in the same time period, with a lost of almost $5 billion. Those number do include costs such as research and development, hardware production, marketing and PR and more which makes his personal view skewed.

Cousins also says that of the 70 million Xbox 360 consoles sold since 2006, about 40 percent were bought since its last major price cut in 2009. He believes that indicates the people who bought the consoles at that time were looking for something that offered the best combination of price and performance and calls that group "mainstream gamers".

      • Are you aware that Microsoft is collecting $6-$8 from the manufacturers of those Android phones that you write about? If not, you should be. Yes, you read it correctly: Foxconn, Samsung, HTC and LG are all paying Microsoft for every Android they make. Oh, by the way, Microsoft owns 2% of FaceBook. Short it at your own financial peril. Seriously.

        Sentiment: Strong Buy

      • That sounds good. But let's manipulate the impression here.

Android tablet sales have only gone up 177%. Since msft tablets had less than 1% of the tablet market and now have 7.5% their sales, while still pathetic compared to 43% of the market and many times the 3 million w8 tablet sales, have gone up 700%.

Let's pretend that's good. And that all the other upcoming hardware using Haswell chips will only kill them, and counterintuitively, make msft sales dominate in a complete reversal of the market based on a feature that most consumers not only don't understand but are blissfully unaware of.

    • Even more impressive: 1/2 of those sales were Surface tablets. Meaning all of the other hardware vendors together split the remaining sales. Hope this shakeout continues.

    • People IMO are looking for a superior alternative to itoy/chromed.

      Sentiment: Strong Buy
