As a consultant and contractor, I have been involved with corporate migrations from our old friend, XP, to Windows 7 Professional, not Windows 8. Corporate America is moving to version 7 big time and the abandonment of 8 is universal. Even laptop buyers are finding, for example, that 8 is the product being pushed out and 7 has almost vanished from the retail market. Microsoft is making a huge blunder by pushing 8 at the expense of a very very good platform called Windows 7 Professional.
abandonment of W 8?? you are full of it bubb W8 now has more installations than OS X, and VISTA- it will continue its market penetration till it is superceded by W-9 and no lie you can tell will prevent it
My xp hard drive failed, and if weren't it being a backup for the work laptop I would have just put Oracle linux on it.
As it was I got hit with a nearly $200 repair bill that moved the files to the new drive but with the evil empire's
brain dead limits on xp to 2.2GB drives didn't fit on my 2.5GB drive (so no copy and just upgrade) and of course
the idot idea of all time the registry can't be used on failed os attempt number 7. Thanks to the guy in malaysia
for the $29 license key on ebay.
But why with all the costs haven't firms woke up to here's your chrome book, your docs are in the cloud
and open office is a better oa tool and tbird is your new email client? If you're going migrate then at least
have the efforts have a positive roi and improved quality.
Rule of thumb 1 - do not trust anything, desktop, laptop or tablet....
Always backup your data to an external drive. It is getting cheaper and cheaper.
Any desktop 5 year or older should be replaced.
Rule of thumb 2 - use standard software, such as MS Office and Windows. Opensource freebie should be avoided. No one is responsible for your loss....
Corporations use standard stuff.
Windows 7 is far from a POS, has FAR better security protection than XP which is so well known now by the hacker community that it is an OS shot full of holes. Migrations, i.e. replacing really (because you cannot migrate XP to 7, another dumb move) works well even if done with basic tools, i.e. GHOST image and then copy data.
