Michigan and Illinois, the union-dominated dreamlands of statists all failures.
The Transcendentalist philosopher Ralph Waldo Emerson once gave a speech in which he discussed our political system as based on a “party of memory and a party of hope.” Emerson was essentially saying that one political party was based on old ideas and holding on to the traditions of the past while the other was based on providing citizens with hope for the future.
Big government liberalism is a failed idea, evidenced by the outrageous crime rates and high unemployment that have become common in cities like Chicago and Detroit, to say nothing of the fiscal insanity that is California. Michigan and Illinois, the union-dominated dreamlands of statists are overshadowed by their neighbor Indiana, an island of red state success led by former Governor Mitch Daniels, though Michigan Governor Rick Snyder appears to be following in Daniels’s footsteps in turning his state around. Nanny-state liberalism has been proven to be a failure so many times that it’s continued expansion must be due to another factor. Just dumb failed leadership in government that allows more.
