Discontinued Items - They are eliminating quality mid-range goods
Just discovered that JCP no longer carries about 10 items that I have purchased regularly for decades! Went to order Underscore lingerie and Cabin Creek pants today and these have been discontinued, as are St John's Bay items. If they don't need me as a customer anymore, I see this as an ominous sign. I've already taken a steep loss on my shares of JCP in my brokerage IRA. I've been holding out hope this would rebound, but now I know it doesn't stand a chance. Selling my shares on Monday!!
That's the problem. Brands have been dropped--like Ambrielle, East 5th, etc.--even Cooks-- because they attracted the customer Ron Johnson no longer wants.
What remains AND what replaces them are not equivalent in any way. JCP wants out of the classics business, figuring that a faster turn of seasonal colors and styles in lesser quality materials is the way to go with younger customers. The aim is not to provide anything lasting.
And I wouldn't get too excited about the return of SJB. I'll bet you a steak dinner that it's going to be cheap and skimpy just like everything else, and not the brand we used to know and love.
