Not a basher here, but I do have a serious question.
The IDO website touts its machine as detecting metal weapons in shoes. That's great, but the TSA looks for explosives in shoes as well. There are plenty of non-metallic explosives, and they would not be detected by a metal detector.
Is there something I'm missing?
I have reply too.. It's a metal detector for shoes and lower areas. It can detect wires in explosives and weapons of many shapes and sizes, made of metal. What is needed is more advanced software maybe. Software to determine the shape of a shoe in relation to other shoes of same brand, even the opposite shoe! The left shoe should be in proportion to the right shoe for example. In today's market a popular weapon of the tomato is the weaponized ceramic knife! Say a horror suspect?, takes a walk through the magshoe wearing the early modern day ceramic knife without metal.
Infrared is rather cheap and could used with the magshoe for shape detections. High intensity halogen lamps for shadow detections. The magshoe's main purpose is to be a deterrent without being a false- positive procedure.
Alright, found something (link is a .pdf file, go to page 5, point 11).
Article is nearly a year old (and the link provided earlier is older).
Still a little concerned.
the order for Australia for several courts is a good indication
that Magshoe's market is much, much bigger than just for
and US court system is 100x bigger
this is just an example
there are 1.4 MILLION walk-through metal detectors deployed
each one a candidate for magshoe !!!!!!
IDO's next generation MagShoe analyzes the mass content of your shoes to determine if it has explosive content. Right now, the shoes pass through the X-Ray machine, so they can "see" into the shoes and everything else you have in your bags. The test they do with the paper where they wipe the insides of the shoe detects explosive material.
The original article I saw quoted the CEO discussing the next generation MagShoe. I can't remember where that was but I did find this looking around:
you are correct and I believe that is why there is no TSA contract, however, IDO has said that they are upgrading the MAGSHOE. The most meaningful change I can think of would be to include explosives detection. Good point, though, you are thinking.
