bioimmunomabman and chinese hampster or anyone who might know ...

Have an elderly relative who was diagnosed with rectal cancer. This person's prevents and issues associated with bleeding, according the oncologist, prevents using Avastin.

Is Kadcyla being studied as a therapy for certain colorectal cancers? The oncologist was unaware of any such study. Thought I had read this was actually happening.

    Thanks

Thanks you for replies. We await results of a biopsy to see if Erbitux can be used instead of avastin.

    • I think Erbitux is the main drug for this.

    • Gee gollybinkers it seems my first post on this subject was deleted by the Yahoo goons probably because I attempted to supply a link. So I just thought I would mention to keep in mind the Lilly / Immunogen partnership. I say this because there is speculation (not announced as far as I know) that an Immunogen charged Erbitux molecule might someday be in play. I sincerely hope your relative finds effective treatment.

      WOOF!!

    • Just like any cancer the treatment options are usually aligned with what stage or how advanced the cancer is. The national Cancer Institute is a very good resource to take a look at. They have a list of options, everything from surgery, to chemotherapy, to targeted therapies (Erbitux, Vectibix, etc...) Kadcyla is effective against HER 2+ cancers, I do not believe colon cancers or rectal cancer fall into that classification. The HER 2+ is nomenclature for a specific marker on a malignant cell that the antibody can bind to. Sorry to hear the problem.

    • I did a quick pubmed search, and while HER2 is significant in gastric cancers, it does not seem to be in rectal cancers, so I don't believe they would have a clinical trial for it anytime soon. Good luck to your relative.
