Are we entering socialism? Does America even know?
According to Merriam-Webster, socialism is "Any of various economic and political theories advocating collective or governmental ownership and administration of the means of production and distribution of goods." Alternate definitions include a "society or group living in which there is no private property," and "a system ... in which the means of production are owned and controlled by the state."
Claims of "wealth redistribution" and "class warfare" aside, it's worth noting that Obama's much-attacked health care plan is based around private enterprise -- not around government control of the means of production. It uses private insurers and private hospitals to handle the flow of medical care (and, not incidentally, those private institutions will reap a large share of the profits that are generated by a more widely-insured populace). For that matter, his proposed top income tax rate -- 39.5% on the highest income bracket -- is a fraction of Richard Nixon's top rate of 70% or Dwight Eisenhower's 92% rate.
To cite a few of Merriam Webster's top 25 terms from the last few days, the attacks on the president, while pragmatic (4) and dogmatic (12), are perhaps less than productive. Although it may be too much to ask for comradery (13) in Washington, a little more integrity (19) would not be out of place. For that matter, is it too much to ask that Obama's critics jettison "socialism" (14) in favor of a more accurate term?
Buyguns, you want a more accurate term than "socialism" from folks who accused Obama of rescueing private insurance companies, private banks, and giant auto companies? You're dealing with massive, simple-minded ignorance. Hollow name-calling is far easier than knowledge and thought.
Faux Capitalist wouldn't be bad. Uh oh. Foreign word. No good. Hamiltonian Federalist? Nah. They'd wonder who Hamiltonian is. And what a Federalist is. I guess Rush Limbaugh fed them the right term after all: Socialist. Has the right negative ring to it. And it nicely contributed to Obama losing the 2012 election. . . . He did lose, didn't he?
"Claims of "wealth redistribution" and "class warfare" aside, it's worth noting that Obama's much-attacked health care plan is based around private enterprise -- not around government control of the means of production."
Completely bogus. European statism which certainly is collectivism/socialism allows private enterprise which is directed by a political elite, naively assumed to be working in the general or social interest.
The general American understand socialism more in the above definition. As we use communism to expressed Merrian Websters now clearly out of date definition as commonly used.
Word games do not cover the reality. Obamacare is sold as government directed but the end point of most Progressives is single payer or full government control. So they have a perverse incentive to see Obamascare fali.
Obama has stated to his Union cronies that his ultimate goal is Single Payer, which would eventually drive private insurers out of business. He estimates this will take 10 to 15 years. Based on his track record and his ramming Obamacare down our throats, anyone who believes otherwise is either deceiving himself or has his head in the sand. If you listen closely, he always says what he plans to do.
