Great Idea on an American natural gas board!

Let's encourage American companies to make methanol which is twice as clean as corn ethanol corruption, 40% cleaner than gasoline cost half as much nominally and 75% less on total usable energy!

Methanol from natural gas can be blended into gasoline with out conflicting properties.

Corn ethanol can not so 30% of the energy can not be used.

    • Keep in mind it takes energy wise, 4.5 gallons of gasoline to make 5 gallons energy wise of ethanol in a perfect enviroment. If something goes less then perfect, you lose.

We need natural gas vehicles that I can fill up at my home with my natural gas heat, hot water and cooking.

    • Methanol is also extremely corrosive, and requires special materials for storage and delivery - much more corrosive than E85.. In addition, Methanol has only 51 percent of the BTU content of gasoline by volume, which means its miles per gallon ratio is worse than Ethanol. As with ethanol, any potential increase in efficiency from methanol's high octane is negated by the need for FFV's to remain driveable on 100 percent gasoline. The lower energy content and the higher cost ratio in building methanol refineries compared to ethanol distilleries have relegated Methanol and M85 to the back seat. Moreover, producing methanol from natural gas results in a net increase of CO2, hastening global warming. Unlike ethanol production, the creating methanol liberates buried carbon that otherwise wouldn't reach the atmosphere.

I don't expect these facts to change anyone's mind - just be aware there is no perfect solution.

    • From a man who owns VLO .Talk about self interest . Previously a hater of ethanol, except for drinking purposes.

    • Methanol produces about half the energy per gallon as gasoline, so you need to burn twice as much to go just as far.

      • Nope. Corn ethanol has 40% less energy than standard gasoline. Then as the physics are incompatible with gasoline a further 30% efficiency penalty is paid - In brand New American cars. With that much wasted energy of course there will be excessive ware.

Methanol as the simplest building block can easily be blended into gasoline with properties in tune with the mixture fore efficient and clean detonation.

But I am sure you will prattle on as you do. Day and night.
