Himax Ramps Up Production, Prepares For Google Glasses Launch Next Year
Chardan Capital Markets met with Taiwan-based LCD producer Himax (HIMX) in New York this week and came away convinced Himax is well on its way to produce LCoS Microdisplays in preparation for the Google (GOOG) Glasses launch next year.
Here is some juicy bit about Google Glasses:
It appears that Google is well on its way to prepare for a launch of its Glasses and has prompted HIMX to begin production ramp of its LCoS Microdisplays that will feature in every single Glass. We believe Google could potentially introduce its product into the market in Q1:14 and not in Christmas 2013, as has been widely speculated. We also believe Google may be introducing more than one model of Glass upon launch in Q1:14 catering to those who require prescription glasses as well.
Following Google investment in HIMX earlier this year, HIMX has already raised its LCoS Microdisplay production capacity to ~500K units per month from ~200K units per month previously and expects to continue to expand its production capacity to get to ~850K per month by end of Q1:14.
Himax may be working with Microsoft (MSFT) as well:
Company also revealed that they are early stages of ramping production for another company – we believe to be Microsoft. HIMX believe that MSFT could potentially introduce its product by mid 2014 suggesting to us that HIMX’s monthly shipment volume in 2H:14 could be materially higher upon launch of products from Google and Microsoft.
