I would like to see development in CNG for residential heating.Many homes north of the Carolinas who do not have access to natural gas.LPG is expensive as only 42k btu/gal.There has to be a simple cost effective way.
Hybreds maybe save 1% or 2% of the total energy cycle. Maybe as internal combustion engines took yet another remarkable leap in efficiency.
The coming technology which will render all this battery and double engine nonsense to the dust heap is fuel cell. Which might well be here to day except wholly defective corn ethanol political corruption is in the way of methanol.
The only good news from hybreds is that the electric drive trains are direct applicable to fuel cells.
Providence has given American solutions to energy security, cost, efficiency while reducing pollution and co2.

Original post is the silliest post ever - number of hybrids sold in US in August 2013 was 59,000. Totals auto sales in the US for the same period was 1.5MM. 4% of the market and the original poster wants to make it out as significant. The more efficient engines have a much bigger role in reducing emissions (as does natural gas).
Fuel cells have been around for over 50 years, were successfully used by the space program. And for all that time their replacing the internal combustion engine (being the next big thing) was "just around the corner"... that never came. Possibly now is their time, but I'll believe it when I see it.
IMHO it's due to subsidies and the well-off willing to spend some sizable $ to be able say (make themselves think?) they're doing something for the environment. Not because of high liquid fuel prices, which have actually dropped nor the price of ng which could be used to run vehicles a lot cheaper.
Batteries about 1:10 stored energy/lb compared to gas/diesel and always will. IC engines take O from air but batts store internally. Scores of batt-powered car mfgs early 20th century best could achieve about 50 mile range sadly not much progress.
