Interesting: One reader's take on THE CHEVY VOLT GRILLE

"Non-functional is non-attractive. Why bother to put a fake grill pattern imprint on a solid insert? To me it's the designer saying "our customers are too stupid to know this isn't a conventional gasoline car so we're gonna put conventional gasoline car cues on it to make them feel better"

I think this guy hits it on the head. But, GM had a choice to make, and played it safe: 'Do we lose the grille, because we know we don't need it? Or put on a fake one so people don't think our innovative car is too weird?'

In one way, I can see why they did this. People have many wrong ideas about electric cars, such as, 'they're slow' or 'they're clunky' or 'they're strange'.

The VOLT is not a pure electric, so having a grille is not that strange. But then, the VOLT's is clearly fake.

One cool thing about pure electrics is, they don't need grilles at all. But VOLT still has an IC engine, so it's got to get air from someplace. It gets its air from below, I suppose.

Can't wait until EVs get rid of grilles entirely. You will see some bizatchin car designs.

Don't hold your breath there webby (or, maybe hold it for a LONG time - maybe you'll pass out and not drop moronic posts here)...

There are still quite a few heat exchangers required on electrics because of the heat that needs to be disappated from any number of systems. You typically cannot get A/C to work properly on a vehicle unless you pass fresh outside air over the condensor. Sure, you could fan power everything, but that kinda defeats the purpose of being as frugal as possible with electric power needs on a vehicle where range is critical. Air from the front of the vehicle is "free" thus the need for some sort of front openings. Those openings usually are "decorated" with a grille...

      Sentiment: Buy
