It's nice to see that the UAW won't do to Tennessee what they did to Detroit.

If VW wanted the UAW they could have settled in Detroit or some other rust belt UAW city.

    • I keep hearing this argument about what the UAW did to Detroit and I keep scratching my head because it doesn't make any sense. Orange county CA went bankrupt and some county in Missisippi also. I am sure there are others. So the UAW causes municipalities to go bankrupt now? More right wing logic.

        What idiotic logic that is.

Say some guy comes to you and says, "This toaster you sold me shorted out, and burned down my house."

Are you seriously going to say, "Well, the Smith's house burned down last year, and I know for a fact Mrs. Smith did not even OWN a toaster. You better reconsider your fire theories there, buddy boy!"

Do you seriously dispute the fact that a particular outcome could result from a variety of causes from instance to instance? Geez.

      • Yes the UAW bleed these companies dry and forced thousands and thousands on the payroll when they weren't needed at high wages to boot.

While they were bleeding their employers dry they voted for Democrats who they kept in office as long as they got what they wanted. Like not allowing Right to Work laws and forcing consumers and government agencies to buy union.

This being a capitalist country better companies from other countries that didn't have the UAW leeching off of them came to the USA and built better cars for less money. Business in Detroit died or moved away leaving an s-hole city depleted of is population run by greedy public unions and corrupt politicians in the union's pocket.

Are you serious? Unions have state and local governments heading for bankruptcy all over
the country. This will be a major problem over the next ten years or so. (As well as Medicare,
Social Security and federal pension promises.)

      • A lot of non union companies go bankrupt also, so what's their excuse?

      • Get your head out of the sand, Mister.

    • What did the UAW do to Detroit? Memphis is just as bad as Detroit, with no UAW, what's their excuse? Look at what republicans have done to Tennessee. Top 10 in poverty and unemployment, and most dangerous state in the US.

      • And another thing the VW plant is in Chattanooga which is over 360 miles away from Memphis clear on the other side of the state. The VW people of Chattanooga want VW to be profitable and succeed thus insuring continued employment and a healthy local economy.

      • Union presidents call city pension plan a 'scare tactic'

        MEMPHIS, TN -
(WMC-TV) - The presidents of the Memphis police and fire unions are up in arms over a new report that calls the current city pension fund unsustainable.

They say it is a scare tactic the city administration is using to change the pension plan and put more of the financial burden on city employees.

The city recently reversed a 4.6 percent pay cut just weeks ago. But as the City of Memphis ended one clash with police and fire unions, a new battle is rearing its head.

Union leaders say the city's new plan to reform the city employee pension system is an even bigger battle than the recent salary fight.

"All we're hearing is about killings and murders and robberies and rapes, yet you want to cut police services?" said Memphis Police Association President Mike Williams.

City Chief Administrative Officer George Little says the pension's unfunded liability is growing faster than taxpayers can afford.

"The [pension] plan that we have right now is not sustainable, certainly not without an increase in taxes or cuts in services," said Little.

        Sentiment: Strong Sell

      • Look at what republicans have done to Tennessee.
        --------------------------------------
You're saying that Republicans held TN down and kept it poor? Detroit was the richest city in the
world in 1950, and now it looks like the remnants of WWIII. The South is attracting business and
moving in the right direction. Look at Saginaw, Flint, Pontiac and Detroit. In the toilet more or
        less.
