I guess one big question is

Is the future of LED business for LED makers to buy sapphire or to grow their own sapphire, or will both business models coexist.

If GTAT were a pure sapphire play I'd prefer them over RBCN. However, they are heavily tied to the cyclical solar business and I think that makes them risky.

Got 1k shares of RBCN today. Just couldn't resist the cheap price. May buy another k if the price goes down further.

But the quarterly is a big wild card.

    • In one of the transcripts, maybe it was at the conference, Rubicon states that some of the companies have already abandoned that effort because they can't compete with the pricing, its cheaper to buy than make.

Also, don't forget Rubicon is vertically integrated in sapphire. They have begun refining their own raw materials and have been perfecting polishing. They are "3" companies essentially.

      Sentiment: Strong Buy

    • In one sense the business model doesn't seem that unreasonable. Why does an LED maker necessarily want to grow their own sapphire? Do semiconductor companies grow their own Silicon? Nope.

In principle a company like RBCN that specializes in growing the stuff you would figure would be more proficient at it than a company whose business is making LEDs, not sapphire.

I think I just talked myself into liking this company a little better.
