Stocks plunge, recover after fake tweet on Obama

The U.S. stock market plunged in early afternoon trading Tuesday, briefly wiping out a triple-digit advance by the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.90% , after a fake tweet appeared on the Associated Press’s tweeter feed describing a terror attack on the White House. The Dow fell 12 points points after being up more than 135 points. It was lately up 120 points.

TheTwitter feed falsely said that there had been two explosions at the White House. White House spokesman Jay Carney is holding his daily press conference as usual.

    • here's what happened to me. i bot uvxy 6.80 this am, pre market. i put a sale up @ 7.50 and went out the rest of the day. when i got home, my sell executed. it must have been the peak of the uvxy spike. $700 profit booked. just dumb luck.

    • I was watching my streamer, and the Dow went from +140 to negative, RED, in seconds. VXX went up a dollar instantly. My short positions all crashed as everyone's stops got taken out. Then, just as fast as it went down, it went back up again. There was no time to react or do anything. I was watching UVXY, thinking of going long, and it shot up to $7.63 from $6.40. I barely had time to say "Sheeeet", and it went right back down. Incredible. A lot of people's stops must have been taken out. I wonder if brokerages will let it stand. I guess they have to. Some people must have lost a lot on that BS.
