New to Raser, and I am tring to figure out what is going on with this company. A geothermal energy company that invents electric motors for trucks in there spare time? Can they turn this thing around?
Actually, it is a company that had an electric motor. They couldn't sell any of them, so they thought they'd get into geothermal power generation.
There weren't any good geo sources around, so they decided to try using the low-temp generators that had been used successfully at Chena Hot Springs in Alaska.
That wasn't a bad idea actually, but they jumped into it with both feet, without doing enough enough preliminary work. Instead of drilling one well and running two generators, they drilled four or five (?) wells and tried to run 20 generators.
Didn't work. There were problems with the wells leaking, and the temperature of the water at the wellhead was too low to run all those generators. Also, the ambient air temperature in Utah is higher than at Chena, which reduces efficiency.
Add to that all the greatly-hyped promises from management that never came to fruition, and the many millions of investment dollars that went down the drain, and you have a company that is in deep trouble.
I'm not an insider or anything. It's just my opinion of what happened, based on things I've read. It's certainly incomplete, and some of it might be wrong. But that's what I think happened.
Yes - you fool! And the $130 Million spent in Indonesia with a real and competent developer builds a plant that generates 45 MW of geothermal power, NOT 6 MW as Raser did!! Avergae cost to develope a geothermal pwerplant in indonesia is about $3 Million per MW, NOT the $20 Million per MW that stellar Raser spent. At that cost it can NEVER get even close to recovering investment, that is why they are heading toward Bankruptcy - they have $60 Million of remaining debt and can't service it!! Pretty simple.
