    gas prices really moving up

30c in the last few days. Oddly enough, maybe it will tip Avis into doing a deal with IDSY as the rental system saves them gas money on every rental

    • who prepays for an entire gas tank? Answer: only a moron. If the gas tank is 20 gallons and the price is $4, why would you prepay $80 for the ability to return the tank empty? The tank will never be empty so you are throwing money away. This same stupid mentality is why most people are happy to get money back from the IRS every year rather than owe the IRS.

Anyone with half a brain chooses to return the tank full and just pay for what you use. Hence, the IDSY system with it's accurate reading saves the company money.

      • found this on Edmunds web site:

Confessions of a Rental Car Agent

How To Avoid Overpaying for a Rental Car

Prepaid Gas Might Save Time but It Costs You Money
Prepaid gas is purely for suckers. Unless you are desperate to save a few seconds, you are wasting money. But you'd be surprised how many people buy it anyway. That's because of the way it is sold; it's never clear what you're paying for. So if you prepaid for a tank of gas and brought it back with even 5 gallons left in the tank — which is pretty typical — then you lost money. You just gave the rental car company the value of 5 gallons of gas. Unless you push the car back onto the lot with an empty tank, you lose money prepaying for gas.

      • I have this argument with friends all the time too. They are happy when they get $1000 from the IRS every year. I try to explain that you gave the IRS and interest free loan for an entire year and they look at me with dumbfounded looks on their faces. These same morons have credit card debt, car loans, and a mortgage that would choke a horse.

So go ahead, pay for your entire tank of gas that you will never use ahead of time.

    • why this saves Avis money. When you rent a car, you can opt to pay for your own gas and return the tank full OR pay something like $6/gallon to return the tank empty. If you chose the later, you wind up paying some absurd charge that is $2-$3/gallon over what you can do for yourself. Only a lazy, old fool would chose that option. Thus, sane people chose to return the tank full.

Problem is many people gas up, drive 30-40 miles to the airport and return the tank "full". A human can discern that the fuel gage is not "full". The IDSY system knows the tank is not full and dings you for the difference. Hence, this is how Avis makes money on gas savings.

Pretty simple concept that only an old fool could not understand.

        Dear dooshbg:
This is why you are a moron and a loser. If you rent a car at Newark airport in your rathole state of NJ and opt to return the car empty, you will be charged 3.48/gal, not $6/gal. That is why most people prefer to return their car empty, unless you are a poor dumb schmuck who thinks 3.48 is a lot of money and would prefer the inconvenience of riding around looking for cheaper gas. Whatever gas is left in the tank is found money to Avis. They make millions on leftover gas.. Why would tthey want to give that up by charging for exact gas used? Thanks again for proving to everyone what a know-it-all schmuck you are.

      dear dooshbg:
Not true, moron. IDSY system will cost Avis money. Most people return cars with gas left in tank. This is found money for Avis. Charging for exact gas used will eliminate this bonanza.
