As we get ready to ring in 2014, we had a preview of black ties and fancy gowns at The Oregon Leadership Dinner, a fundraiser for the Special Olympics of Oregon on Nov. 16. Gov.
John Kitzhaber, attended and it was a chance to preview the newly-remodeled tasting room at Willamette Valley Vineyards. Guests also were able to sample a new 2012 Pinot Noir “Oregon Governor’s Cuvee,” of which only one barrel was produced for the Governor.
I was greeted by Bill and Corey Cross, Nicholina Terzieff and Rebecca Ball. Willamette Valley Vineyeards created a gorgeous event space. Mauri Osborne and James Conner were helping to set out hundreds of crystal wine glasses.
We were directed downstairs to the Barrel Room, where we had a chance to enjoy a winemaker’s wine tasting right from the barrel. I saw Representative David Gomberg and his wife Susan and A.J. Stoll and his wife M
arj. OSU Dean of Agriculture Dan Arp, Wanda Arp and OSU President Ed Ray also attended. I was told that former governors Vic Atiyeh, Barbara Roberts and Ted Kulongoski were also among the crowd.
The five-course dinner included such delicacies as Columbia River Steelhead cake, wood fired Siletz wild game dried fruit sausage, fennel brioche and Gerry Frank’s Konditorei spiced pumpkin cake. All were served with wine parings.
Willamette Valley Vineyards CEO Jim Bernau proudly welcomed guests. Dinner speakers included Special Olympics Board Chair Kerry Tymchuk and State Sen. Peter Courtney. The highlight of the evening included comments by Gov. Kitzhaber, Cylvia Hayes,
Gerry Frankand Special Olympics Competitor Jennifer Hill. Hill competes in bocce, an Italian sport. Her mother Susan Hill had also been a competitor. Jennifer Hill provided honorary medals to Kitzhaber and Hayes. At the end of the evening, Bernau gifted each attendee with a bottle of “Oregon Governors’ Cuvee” in a commemorative wooden box.
