Was just watching CNN and they just announced 40 total cases of swine flu has been confirmed in the USA. This is a jump from the initial 20 cases. No link as it was on TV. Anyone else see this?
This could have the potential to be bigger than what the Obama nation is calling it...
I don't think this is going to move the market in one direction or another. Unless something really bad happens such as 300 deaths. I remember SARS didn't cause any market reaction at all.
the movers should be hotels and airlines, while more news will be out about the flu thing, it will be nice to hear about cruise liner poisoning passengers too, (as much as i wish all good health) this "must be" the next on the news, interesting which cruise ship they will choose this time;(
If the death rate is consistant with what we have been seeing in Mexico, it could get bad.
The death rate on the swine flu is currently about 8%.
Compare that to the 1918 pandemic that killed 50 million had a death rate of 2%.
Normal flu kills about 0.05% that it infects.
I think 8% is a little high. The death rate would be less in the US than in Mexico because of better treatement. But this high death rate is what is causeing the CDC to panic right now.
If it spreads like wildfire this could easily kill millions and cause panic.
This is weird. I saw the flashing news at the top of CNN a few minutes ago saying the 40 cases are now confirmed in the US and then it was off 1 minute later. They are hiding something now and that is not good.
I do believe that many more cases will show up in the lower states as the week goes on. I hope that the gov't does not try to hide these cases to keep the markets in the fog. They need to watch it carefully to prevent a widespread outbreak.
