Nuclear Energy is on its way out of fashion. Germany has decided to scrape most of its nuclear power plants within 20 years. Other countries will follow suit.
Naural gas is abundant and cheap. New oil and gas finds are replacing coal and nuclear. Consol Energy is reading the tea leaves and diversifying out of coal. Exelon had better do the same, or it will find itself out of business within 20 years.
Although Nat gas is affecting the viability of Nuc power there are still plans to bring 4 new plants online by 2020, and 16 permits more issued in the US. Over 60 units being built worldwide. Once everyone starts the switch to Nat gas, the price won't stay cheap long.
The physics of energy says otherwise. Politics can dictate as it will for the short term ,but the only reliable energy source for the intermediate term , next 100 years plus, is nuclear. To say otherwise is to ignore the science. BTW, France gets 80% of their electricity from nuclear , they reprocess the waste and the entire annual waste product is stored safely in an area the size of a basketball court. Also don't look for Germany to can the nukes. Passions fade ,and nobody is going to dismantle a perfectly good [and safe ] reactor.
