    workaround revealed

I took your comment to heart and I went and read those claims in the patents where the Court of Appeal confirmed infringement.

What I found is things like claim 150 in patent 6,317,592 which seems to cover every mobile e-mail device in which the transmitters add an identifier for the transmitter to the message. RIM should have relied on the use of return addresses on envelopes as prior art for that one.

The only thing I found that could be thought to be a bandwidth saver is claim 287 in patent 6,317,592 which seems to say that the overall system should try to keep track of where transmitters are located. You could save bandwidth by not having every base station in the world try to contact a particular Blackberry when that Blackberry has already told the system that it is in New York. "Well duh ..." as my daughter says when she is annoyed with me.

Any reasonable patent system/judicial system would have tossed these claims out years ago.
