Shrinking margins will crush RIMM:
No question the new Pearl is selling like gangbusters, but despite a monumental revenue number, and revenue guidance, RIMM still missed its EPS number by a penny. And guidance forward is a penny below the high-end, and the 92 cents to 99 cents range is well below the $1 consensus per share the Street was looking for.
What this all suggests is RIMM's operating margins are under surprising pressure. And that's what happens when you start to shift your sales focus from corporate clients (where margins have a little more flexibility) to consumers who are a lot more finicky when it comes to slapping down some plastic for a new cell phone.

Broadcom says options dated 'after the fact'

Now it's just a matter of determining the degree.
Broadcom Corp. acknowledged Monday that former executives picked the grant dates for stock options 'after the fact' in apparent violation of accounting rules. The Irvine semiconductor company would not name the employees or say how many were involved. The Securities and Exchange Commission also elevated its inquiry into Broadcom's stock options accounting to a formal investigation. 'The company has acknowledged wrongdoing,' said analyst Rob Enderle of market research firm Enderle Group. 'Now it's just a matter of determining the degree.'

Taiwan Mobile annouces BlackBerry costs, fees

Taiwan Mobile has announced fees for their BlackBerry services.
Currently offering the BlackBerry 7290 and BlackBerry 8700g, monthly fees will range fromNT$899 (US$28) to NT$1,799.
The company will offer the BlackBerry 7290 and 8700g handsets for sale at NT$7,990 (US$245) and NT$12,990, respectively.
For NT$899 a month, a subscriber of the service can transfer up to 2MB (megabytes) of data with additional data transfers charged NT$0.15 per KB (kilobyte), according to TWM. The NT$1,799 plan allows for unlimited data transfer, noted the company.
Overseas roaming will operate this way: 40% off in the seven countries that are members of the Bridge Mobile Alliance, of which TWM is a member; 20% off in the US for T-Mobile users and 50% off for Cingular users; in China, NT$0.23 discounted per KB for users of China Mobile.
Ooly 2,000-3,000 handsets are initially available for sale, TWM president Harvey Chang said. But he added that enough BlackBerrys would be available to serve an anticipated 10,000 BlackBerry subscribers within a year to year and a half.
Channel Inventory Increase Accounts for 34% of earnings (4 Ratings) 22-Dec-06 12:13 am
Have all of us short forensic accountants missed the obvious?
In the beginning of the cc, they said revenue was up 27%. Units were 1.8M vs 1.4M (headline increase of 28.5%). HOWEVER, channel inventory grew by 200K. While logical for a new product roll out, it should be discounted in calculating as actual sales (or growth more specifically) until the channel returns to normal. Assuming that the channel was lean before this quarter (big if really given we are talking about RIMM), that 200K of units * $300 list price of each equates to $60M. Back that out and the number of units also falls back to 14% increase. Take that from earnings and you get 116M net (which I know isn't valid because there is some direct cost associated with the units that would need to be backed out as well). Compared to year ago of 120M, 116M doesn't look so hot. And this is what people are paying 60x's earnings for?
