This is BB7 feature only BB 10 will have BBM voice and BBM video which has been confirm by Crackberry web site. It will be announced with all other features that they keeping for themselves till launch.
This is big in developing countries in Africa and South East Asia where Rimm is already doing well this well strengthen their position.
BB10 will be geared toward North America & Europe at least in the beginning.Parts of developing countries will be introduced on gradual basis. BB7 will still be supported and improved as confirmed by Rimm many times over.
BB 10 is in a different class and it is developed from ground up with feature like balance, flow, NFC, Hub and more to be announced. It will not be a cheap phone unlike the BB7 curve which are really BBM phones and are solid and cheap to maintain. They are great for people on budget
RIM is getting its lunch handed to them in other countries too with cheap android phones. Check international market share. Wifi calling across platforms is not a new feature there. It is another example of RIM playing catch up to the market feature that was at least 2 years old.
Blackberries dont have front facing cameras so all they could do was voice at this time. Another strike against it against IOS and Android.
I wonder if Skype is not going to be on BB10 considering that BB is investing so heavily in a native video calling app.
BBM is now 62 million & BBM voice will make this number grow I can assure you. It would also translate to bigger sales of BB7 in developing countries. I am not sure why I don't see it that way. This is very positive news and it shows that Rimm is innovating on all fronts.
In regard to Skype. I can only tell you that Rimm and MSFT have a strong relationship way before NOK came to the picture. Having said that skype should be coming to BB10. Why would MSFT miss out of on a big potential with BB customers. 80 million and growing with a number toping 100 million in a year or 2
