Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, Inc. Message Board

PNRA and KKD are not comparable

I don't know how many times this false comparison is brought up by longs and shorts alike. Below are Yahoo Finance's summary descriptions of their businesses.

    PNRA:

"Panera Bread Company operates a retail bakery-cafe business and franchising business under the concept names Panera Bread Company and Saint Louis Bread Company... Panera Bread specializes in meeting consumer dining needs by providing food, including fresh baked goods, made-to-order sandwiches on baked breads, soups, salads, custom roasted coffees and other cafe beverages, and targets suburban dwellers and workers by offering a specialty bakery and cafe experience with a neighborhood emphasis. The Company's bakery-cafes are principally located in suburban, strip mall and regional mall locations..."

    KKD:

"Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, Inc. is a specialty retailer of doughnuts. The Company's principal business is owning and franchising Krispy Kreme doughnut stores, where it makes and sells over 20 varieties of doughnuts, including its signature Hot Original Glazed and nine other prescribed varieties. Each of its stores is a doughnut factory with the capacity to produce from 4,000 dozen to over 10,000 dozen doughnuts daily. The Company also sells in its stores drip coffee, other beverages, other bakery items and collectible memorabilia such as tee shirts, sweatshirts and hats... The Company also accomplishes off-premises sales through its direct store delivery system."

    Now ask yourself these questions:

    * Which establishment is more likely to be a mealtime destination?

    * How much product is the average customer likely to consume in one visit?

    * Given a random sample of 100 customers of each establishment, how much money is each group likely to spend on company products in a given time frame?

    * How many KKD customers would be required to produce revenue equivalent to one average PNRA customer?

In short, most rational people would not consider a couple of doughnuts equivalent to a meal, even if you throw in a cup of coffee to wash them down. The same logic applies to false comparisons between KKD and MCD, Wendy's, or any other restaurant chain. KKD is not a restaurant, and therefore any comparisons between the economics driving their respective business models are not relevant. (It can even be debated as to whether or not it is primarily a retail chain as opposed to a wholesale bakery, but that is a topic for another post.)

    • "I'm not sure he thinks much of those 99%."

That is an understatment, to be sure.

"Now if we could only cut down on some of those others."

      Good luck.

    • I think x59 may have been using a little sarcasm there, bakerz. I'm not sure he thinks much of those 99%. You're doing the best thing by putting this one to sleep tho. It was getting tiresome to read all those responses! Now if we could only cut down on some of those others.

      LOL. what a loser.

X59, I've got better ways to spend my time, so I'll leave you alone so you can post 19 times over the course of a day on a Yahoo message board. Wouldn't want to threaten your reason for existing. Continue in your quest to keep this board free of any unpure Krispy-critical sentiments. Heil Krispy- crush the infidels. Go get em sport.

    • i agree.
my fear would be to know the guy in person.
asan anonymous poster, all i had to do, put him on IGNORE.

    • <eom>

    • I suggest as hard as it might be resist any attempt at rational discource with Idiot X59. The guy at best is a waste of time. His comments have no substance just bashing Shorts and sounds like a real psycho. Is nearby most of the time waiting to pounce on anything disageeable to his case. Fights crap with bigger crap but never any substance to his comments. Convinced he is a loser in investing as well as a small fry. Save your breath and only dialogue with Shorts or Longs who add value to the forum. He adds nothing . Spews his anger then projects that anger, dirty shorts and losing positions on others. Low rent just doesn't cut it. Don't respond its much more pleasant or ignore you'll find nothing missed at all.

    • Baker's dozen- To quote your own warning, Whoa! Better change those shorts, 'cause you just stained them after you wrote that post! Easy!

"It's just a discussion board," remember?

      Let's dissect your latest gem:

"I believe that innuendo is always indirect, and usually derogatory. FYI - an accusation is not a.k.a. innuendo, they are two different things."

Very good; Webster would be proud,

Another synonym, by the way, is "insinuation" (see Webster).

      What edition is your Roget's?

If you must, it was an INDIRECT accusation; an insinuation (a.k.a. innuendo).

      Satisfied?

"The THEORY that was espoused was that KKD bought a bakery-cafe to compete in thebakery-cafe market (not really even much of a stretch there.)"

You still can't get it straight.

The "theory" you claim to have "espoused" was not a theory at all.

It was di_vur_se_fi's fictitious, unsubstantiated, undocumented statement/accusation (i.e., proclamation, not theory) regarding KKD's purpose for purchasing MMX that you asked me if I believed or not.

Your "espousal" of that statement was an "indirect" re-statement of the statement/accusation that di_vur_se_fi made.

Therefore, "indirect" accusation = insinuation = innuendo by you.

Furthermore, di_vur_se_fi stated: "The MMX purchase is KKD's attempt to go after PNRA's space."

Not "KKD bought a bakery-cafe to compete in the bakery-cafe market" that you so strongly "espoused."

You have learned from di_ver_se_fi well.

Twist the previously stated words a little to fit your "argument," and nobody will notice.

"The MMX purchase is KKD's attempt to go after PNRA's space." is an accusation, indirect, direct, or otherwise.

Sorry, but you must have espoused one and not even realized it.

"My apologies for ASSUMING that someone who APPEARS to spend an inordinate amount of time on this message board day after day, had some interest in the stock."

I have an extreme interest in the stock and will jump back in when the time is right.

The extremely insightful posts by 99% of the posters here are doing a wonderful job in providing me guidance for the next step.

I pay particular attention to fairy tales, and stories about how a KKD in Ames, Iowa didn't have any customers between 3 and 3:15 PM on a Monday afternoon, while two counter people were actually sitting down (!) on the job.

By the way, what time period is considered inordinate?

I didn't know there were rules.

Although, I must admit, there was another poster on this board, who thought he could lay down board etiquette for the KKD board.

"Thank you for clearing that up by stating that your purpose for posting here is to identify so-called "crap" and "rub their noses in it."

      Any time.

Just please refrain from posting crap, yourself, and all will be fine.

As an aside, do you also "espouse the theory" that BB & T and KKD are in collusion, and have conspired to cook KKD's books for the last 2-3 years?

Di_vur_se_fi would love it, if you did.

By the way, easy on the CAPS next time.

You might stain another pair of shorts.

In the meantime, brush up on your Roget's.

    • Their factory stores are not all that much bigger than a non-factory store. I don't see that having a non-retail location in every area to serve as a factory store makes any sense. Maybe after 3 or 4 have opened it would serve some purpose.

    • Carl, certainly you of all people know the real mikey when you see him. This is not the real mikey he's me (martinshortin). I hacked his yahoo ID. Didn't you hear? I'm just trying to use my clever wit by impersonating mikey so that all us shorts can make fun of him for his incorrect long views. Of course I misrepresent him, but he's not here anymore, so that's OK.
