    Buy order in for 1,000 F @ 7.75

Somewhere down the road, this kind of trade, especially when it involves naked shorting, is going to bite America in the ass.

Naked shorting is illegal. At the end of the day, some people are going to go to jail and go bankrupt from the fines levied on them.

However, these likely will be some combination of major traders, funds, and brokerage firms. These are the people responsible not the retail shortie.

And what will that mean for the retail shortie? Not one hell of a lot. Think someone is going to make some magic calculation as to how much the naked short element depressed the price of each stock involved then make the retail shorts give that amount back? It is an impossible calculation and won't happen.

Those that engineered it will go to jail. Whatever of their illgotten gains available (along with any other monies they have) will be seized and the world will go on much as before.

As for shorting itself (the legitimate kind), its an essential part of the fabric of the stock market and is very unlikely to be changed. The only likely changes will be those designed to prevent future naked shorting.
