And isn't the fact that Amazon DIDN'T try this, ever, in the almost four years that customers have been requesting it, just about the most reckless and stupid decision possible.
Even if it flopped, they would have just had another DX on their hands. You ditch it and move on with E-ink, and scare off your competitors.
Instead, they choose to risk irrelevancy for a device they've invested millions, if not billions in and tried to make their flagmark product.
I'm going to check one out too and am pretty sure I want to get one. I think they'll do well with it, but some media support would be nice. The guy at minyanville calls it the worst of both worlds. If Amazon had launched this thing, I'm sure everyone would be calling it a stroke of genius.
I'm actually going to go into a B&N, when I can to test one out and see if it's as bad as reported. I really see the NOOK Color as an eReader with web capabilities. Every thing else on it is just flavor. Which, why wouldn't you want to be able to get on the web too. It's worth the extra $100.
Thank you kindly. And thanks for sticking around on the board even after selling.
And a little food for thought about the market for this sort of thing:
We really just want to read and surf the web. Hold the ifart, please.
Just responding to this to say I really liked your post. It's almost changed my view of the NOOK Color. I did a little more research and found that the memory is expandable to 32Gigs (as opposed to the NOOK expandable to 16Gigs). It's a little heavier (15.8oz as opposed to 11.5oz) which is a concern but I don't think 4oz is going to kill anyone.
Oh, and to answer a question above:
Look to the right, "Expected ship date: Nov 19". So WELL before X-Mass. They'er being smart and getting it out before Black Friday even!
Analyst should re-evaluate, and reconsider the stock. No one knew that Nook Color is coming just a few days ago. Do you think that they started that a month ago. I bet that much of the loses last quarter came from R&D of the Nook Color and not from the lowest price of Nook. That along with 15mil. expenses around the proxy fight. The estimate for the upcoming results are (-0.20 to + 0.05) per share. So, they were able to come up with a great product and still break even. From now on they will only pick up the fruits. Every mom will take Nook Color home. Forget about Nintendo DS, LeapFrog, SPS...etc.
The Nook Color looks great and I'm going to get one. Price is good and gets away from that dumb e-ink technology I didn't like. Sure hope it will move the stock, although after hours it doesn't seem to be doing anything. Today's action was absolutely pathetic.
