Here's a map from more than 300 years before Alan's Mediterranean cruise, which labels the Adriatic as the Gulf of Venice, clearly a separate body of water from the area of the Mediterranean south of it, ie the Ionian Sea.
There is every reason why there should be a "separate" Ionian Sea, as the humans here have shown you on every possible basis.
Your idiotic spew is bogus, not the geographical, geologic, oceanographic & otherwise scientific fact of the real Ionian Sea, more different from the Adriatic than is the North Sea from the Baltic (both of which lie on continental shelf), for instance. By contrast, the Norwegian (adjacent to the North Sea) & Greenland Seas lie over oceanic basins.
