There are far colder places in Alaska than the North Slope. Interior cities like Fairbanks on occasion see temps of 40 below during the winter.
If Alaska had better weather, far far more people would be living there. Including myself. It's my favorite vacation destination of 1,000 or more miles away but since I'm a California kid, I'll only go there duriing the summertime.
Fairbanks record is -62 F. Record low for Barrow is -56 F. Being close to the ocean doesn't help much when it's covered with ice & the sun doesn't shine. Fairbanks is 446' in elevation, vs 10' for Barrow.
