Awe Struck by Nucleic Acid Origami

The sheer beauty of this nano structured tetrahedron,
“nucleic acid origami,” a Buckminster Fuller vision,
makes me want to buy the stock.

The last thing the bowl me over like this, was research at the advanced light source, imaging the role of prion proteins in the natural epigenetic response to heat/environmental stress on bacteria and plants. It seems that prions are key to opening the genetic library all organisms hold and express long dormant capabilities.

    • Prions as Epigenetic Elements
Prions as Epigenetic Elements of Inheritance.
We all have been concerned about Prion diseases like "Mad cow", Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE), scrapie and Kuru. The seeming indestructibility of the prion protein it self, but this new finding shows us nature always has a silver lining, and may have implications for the genetic expression adaptability that we have seen in some char experiments.
We need more microbiologist on this list to ask Susan Lindquist.
She has also proposed a mechanism by which organisms can unleash hidden variation and evolve by leaps and bounds.
Lindquist suggests that studying this phenomenon would be a powerful approach for discovering hidden variation in plants — unlocking the basis of traits such as drought resistance or salt tolerance.

I'm sending this on to the DuPont/ORNL collaboration on Hg heavy metal remediation, this mechanism must be active in the metal eating geobactors. and a powerful approach
for discovery of their variations. as with the menagerie of wee-beasties,

Prions and chaperones: Outside the fold
Susan Lindquist has challenged conventional thinking on how misfolded proteins drive disease and may power evolution. But she still finds that criticism stings.

Prions are a common mechanism for phenotypic inheritance in wild yeasts
