I see VRTX, a 410 billion comapny, is down over 5 points on what is seen as dissapointing data on it's Cysic fibrosis drug. Hopes I guess were higher for the interim look on their phase 2.
No one knows that RGN has a known CF researcher looking ino TB 4, inhaled, as a possibe CF therapy. But as usual, RGN has no money and no decent mgmt, to get it partnered:
<<RegeneRx Biopharmaceuticals, Inc. announced today that it is seeking a strategic partner to assist in the development of RGN-457 for the treatment of cystic fibrosis (CF). RGN-457 is based on thymosin beta 4 (Tβ4) peptide formulated as an inhaled therapeutic agent to address this patient population. CF is a life-threatening, hereditary disease that impairs the patient's ability to breathe due to the accumulation of thick and sticky mucus secretions in the airways of the lungs. There are estimated to be 30,000 and 40,000 CF patients in the U.S. and Europe, respectively. It is, therefore, considered an "orphan" disease in both territories. In 2006, the predicted median age of survival for patients with cystic fibrosis was 37 years.
"Having been involved in cystic fibrosis research and the development of several of the CF therapies currently on the market, I believe RGN-457 has the potential to be an important treatment for CF. Our published data indicating that Tβ4 reduces the cohesivity of CF sputum, and data from others showing Tβ4's anti-inflammatory properties, strongly suggest that RGN-457 could be a novel and important pulmonary therapy for persons with CF," stated Bruce Rubin, M.D., M.Engr., M.B.A., Professor and Vice Chair of Pediatrics, Wake Forest University, Winston-Salem, NC.
"We have completed a substantial amount of preclinical work necessary for an IND application, in addition to existing toxicology and pharmacokinetic data from our current clinical programs. We believe RGN-457 could be developed relatively quickly with appropriate resources, thus, our interest is in identifying a strong strategic partner to work with us on this important product opportunity," stated J.J. Finkelstein, RegeneRx's president & chief executive officer.>>
Sno, I know it is frustrating and maybe with Claudio gone it will change, but it always seemed that things happened with Cavazza's holdings when they were good and ready... I don't think it will be any different here...I think c bros always ulled the stings...If that weren't the case there would have been changes here long ago...
'Bas, concern for some here is that ST and the C Bros may not use same strategy for their RGRX holdings as they have for their other bio-pharms- - - In RGRX case, they have accepted incompetent management, and pipes, etc, with the probable goal of letting RGRX implode financially, then stepping in and picking up the pieces as the BK proceedings unfold.
Remember that "conclave on the Italian island a few years ago" - - understandings could have been reached then between the C's and the 'Steins as to how things would progress.
Yes, sounds like a "conspiracy theory" - - - but stranger things have happened. And what other explanations are there for a major holder to accept such a level of mis-management for so many years? Would like to hear some different theories.
<<CAMBRIGDE, MASS. (TheStreet) -- The combination of two experimental drugs from Vertex Pharmaceuticals(VRTX) improved the function of a protein that is defective or missing in most patients with cystic fibrosis, but the treatment effect was relatively small and may not be strong enough to improve lung function.
Vertex shares fell $4.14, or 7%, to $48.90 Thursday on investor concerns that the company's effort to develop a two-drug treatment for the most common genetic cause of cystic fibrosis looks to be more challenging than previously hoped.>>
Gee whiz..VRTX must have some good research capability in CF. VRTX is about a $10 BILLION market cap. IF VRTX has put so much effort into a CF program....wouldn't it make sense they may want to coninue exploring possible therapies wth the in house CF team they already have???
SO? what does RGRX have? Another possible CF therapy to explore. But RGRX is broke. VRTX is not. RGRX has the drug idea in TB 4. VRTX does not. VRTX has a full research staff for CF. RGRX does not.
<<<"These data open the door to the possibility of treating people with the most common form of cystic fibrosis by using two medicines together that target the defective protein that causes the disease," Vertex’s chief scientist Peter Mueller says in a statement.
The problem is the results don’t show a highly effective outcome and that’s why investors are selling off the shares today.>>
There's your contact, Finkelstein.....Peter Mueller.
VRTX is down over $5......there are 206 million shares out...so $1.03 BILLION in VRTX vale is gone today.
VRTX was doing a <<combo>> drug situation.
Why on earth wouldn't it make sense for RGRX (broke) to contact VRTX (rich with a CF setback) ????
