Why is it that Boise Cascade stock is trading 10x more than Bluelinx? Is it just financial performance? talent? leadership? Analyst confidence/speculation? Appears to be two companies heading in opposite directions. One soaring & the other circling the drain.
Boise Cascade makes stuff. These guys just drive it around in trucks.
There are three main players - BLDR (reasonable management and gaining share, it appears, but still loss-making), BXC (new management needed, and also loss-making) and HBPI (too small, needs to merge into, or be bought by, one of the bigger boys IMHO).
But the competitive problem is the likes of Home Depot, who are now so many places that distribution isn't as attractive as it used to be. There are still opportunities as volumes come back and these companies (hopefully) return to profitability, but if housing falters again, look out.
If half the rumors coming out of that organization are true, they're in big trouble. Groveling to save major customers, losing more key people to the competition, castrated sales reps, brow-beaten employees, - it's a shame. Hopefully they will make it.
