The previous week (1/28/13 -2/3/13) also made the top ten list (#9) at 509K checks. Data on the most recent week 2/11 - 2/17 is probably not available yet, but my gut tells me it was likely another record week. Extrapolation of the data suggests another record month. I am estimating 2.1M to 2.4M checks for the month of February.
Prorated 1/28 -2/3 checks: (592K x (3/7)) = 218K
2/4 - 2/10: 592K Checks
Total checks per 10 days period: 810K = 81K per day avg
Total For February - 81K x 28 days = 2.268M
However, if my estimates are correct, 2013 would mark the first Jan to Feb decrease in checks on record (per the NCIS website).
As a follow-up, I am not convinced the NCIS is an accurate indicator of sales. Personally, I purchase my firearms in "batches" to cut down on the NCIS background check "fee" that gun dealers charge. The fees can be up to 10% of the purchase price (if buying a Ruger 10/22), so I am probably not the only one that has this mentality.
