iPhone and iPad maker Apple Inc. may have to turn to Sony for manufacturing the smartphone’s camera CMOS (Complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor) sensor for the upcoming iPhone 5 which is scheduled for a September release.
According to FBR’s Capital Analyst Craig Berger, Santa Clara-based digital imaging solutions developer Omnivision, if given a chance, was supposed to use the world’s first BSI-2 technology which uses 1.1-micron pixel architecture allowing for low-light sensitivity situations and accurate color reproduction for improved overall image quality.
Another semiconductor heavyweight, Taiwan-based TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company) was also one of the contenders and would use a 65nm manufacturing process on 300mm wafers. The yield rates, however, have been unacceptably low so far.
Sony, at the moment, is the most likely company to grab 90 percent of the contract to build the 8MP CMOS image sensors for the upcoming Apple-made smartphone and is likely to cost around $500 million.
Omnivision, however, is still in contention as a backup supplier, the ITProPortal reported.
what did many americans say about iraq wmd in the ten years before the second war started? including the media and the politicians. what is the ultimate truth? are they liars? did the media and the politician admit they lied? what do they say now? I think they choose to be silent.
The same can be said here once the truth is found.
assumed more aapl biz, better world economy, more cam sells due to 2Xcam tablets & phones? i don't "know" only ovt & any people they leak to, know. what do you think? why do craig, ashok, sne ceo & tristan think sne in bed w/ aapl? are they all liars? ps: other analysts say ovt & sne split aapl biz. why is that? are they liars too? is everybody that says something arguably bad for ovt a liar?
The guidance is much higher than last quarter. Both top end and low end. OVTI has no knowledge of its customer's product plan until it received an order. There is no way ovti can add biz they hope they get. CFO will not do such thing like you say.
theoretically but not necessarily. ovt can assume it will get biz it had in past in deciding on guidance. the lower end of guidance may include what they know they'll get and the top end adds biz they hope they get. and once they give guidance they have no duty to update even if they know things have worstened.
OVTI provided guidance in the last CC. The analysts average estimates is $277million compared to $193million a year ago and $258 million last quarter.
We can make two assumptions whether Apple placed order for the iPhone 5 to OVTI. The guidance should include information OVTI already know. Right?
for the reported fiscal q2, that's only if ovt included the biz in guidance before it knew for certain it lost the biz, but for guidance for q3, you're thinking is sound unless they made it up elsewhere which i doubt. also consider, they'll still have any biz associated w/ iphone 3 and 4. next 10-k or if earlier, chopworks teardown, should be most telling. the stock price is also a good indicator because these things may leak, especially if you speak mandarin and cantonese. lol
