    Simply Mac Acquisition Coming

Simply Mac was founded in August 2006 and is committed to providing a quality Apple experience for customers in the intermountain west. Simply Mac operates premier Apple Specialist retail locations in the Utah, Colorado, Wyoming, & Idaho markets.

Why does this matter? Well GME has 20 job listings for this company on their careers website. Part of the job listing "GameStop has recently developed a strategic business partner relationship with Simply Mac,"

Now GME for the last Holiday season had GameStop Kids pop up shops. Management also hinted that they were looking to possibly expand BuyMyTronics with a retail component. So GME is looking to diversify and expand their bricks and mortar retail business more. The trade ins of electronic devices and especially Appl devices has been huge for GME.

BuyMyTronics is based out of Denver CO and Simply Mac would make logistical sense. My read on it is that they are testing the waters on a BuyMyTronics store or an acquisition is on the way. Simply Mac will start to fill this niche of a defined brand that deals with refurb and new tablets, phones, and media players.

      • Hate to say it, but told you so.

Grapevine-based GameStop Corp. has been quietly nurturing a new retail business and now it’s ready tp talk about it.

Simply Mac, a store that has the vibe of an Apple store and sells the same products, opened its first area location this morning in Uptown Village at Cedar Hill.

It’s not an Apple knock-off. Simply Mac is an authorized Apple seller and repairer of Apple products and a year ago became a 49.9 percent-owned subsidiary of GameStop.

Simply Mac founder and president Steve Bain said the retailer has the potential to open several hundred stores. There are only about 250 Apple stores in the U.S., but they’re in larger markets.

“Apple is very supportive of what we’re doing,” Bain said. The first Simply Mac store opened in 2006 in Orem, Utah and the company is based in Salt Lake City.

Simply Mac was looking for a partner that could invest money in the specialty store, but with the expertise to help it grow. For the same reason, GameStop has been buying smaller companies, but mostly for its digital and trade-in businesses so far. This is the first retail chain GameStop has acquired in several years. It led the consolidation of the video game retail business buying out competitors like Funcoland.

Last month, Simply Mac opened its first Texas store in Midland. The chain’s 13th store opens next week in Tyler. Stores in Shreveport, Lincoln, Neb. and Springfield, Mo. are opening soon. Its other stores are in Utah, Colorado, Idaho and Wyoming.

In the past four years since GameStop said it would expand into new ventures, it’s met with 700 start-ups and bought five of them, said GameStop CEO Paul Raines. “We’re always looking for new ideas.”

Unlike Apple stores, Simply Mac takes trade-ins of Apple and other branded products in exchange for store credit. GameStop is the biggest player in the trade-in business and refurbishes and recycles Simply Mac’s products that it buys from consumers.
GameStop has a facility in Grapevine that employs 1,200 people who process used electronics. GameStop also provides Simply Mac with human resources and real estate services.

The two companies are a good fit, Raines said. Read more about it in Saturday’s Dallas Morning News.
