DuPont Management Stumbles and Fumbles in the Ag Arena
THE WEAK IN REVIEW
Good Evening, Bonsoir, Guten Abend,
Readers, The pronounced weakness in the DuPont AG segment suggests DuPont AG may not be the agricultural powerhouse envisioned by DuPont's "leaders". Sales in Q1 for DuPont AG tumbled, down 6%, 7% by volume. Operating earnings were off 5%. Seed sales took a dive, down a whopping 9%.
Overall DuPont AG had a sick quarterly performance, which DuPont's accountability-evasive Management was quick to blame on the weather. Trouble is, Monsanto reported robust gains in sales and income in Monsanto's latest quarter, and presumably Monsanto customers experienced the same winter storms in North America. Likewise, Syngenta reported an increase in sales in its first quarter.
Competition in the global business of agriculture is intensifying with powerful players such as Monsanto, Syngenta, BASF, Bayer, Dow AgroSciences. Unfortunately for the dreams of Ms. Kullman, DuPont Chieftess who
wants to make a chemicals-free DuPont into an ag juggernaut, DuPont has been left playing second fiddle to Monsanto in seed biotechnology and production, and third fiddle to Syngenta and Bayer in crop protection and ag chemicals. (Imprelis, Tell Us!)
