...so, this January, NPD shows a five week vs a four week January last year. But normalized, Video Game Hardward sales were down 17% year over year, and game sales down 13%. Those are huge numbers since we are now comping against 2012 Months that were down over 20% from 2011.
Well, I would just look at the hardware numbers NPD gives, then you dont have to worry about digital sales, since there aren't digital sales of hardware, and virtually all MCZ sales are hardware. As for online, I think NPD decribes what they look at as 'phsyical sales', which sounds like it excludes online. But I'm not sure how they what happens if a store has both a physical and online presence....I'm not sure how they differentiate. But I do believe NPD's number is an apples to apples one, and thus a valid comparison.
So, imo, the 17% year over year Jan '13 vs Jan '12 decline in gaming hardware is a valid comparison. And again, thats on top of an awful Jan '12 v Jan '11 comparison. At most, imo, one could argue that due to increasing online sales, it exaggerates the decline by a small amount.
