Energy Secretary Picks Extreme Anti-Nuke Chief of Staff

This is troubling. The Union of Concerned "Scientists" is an extreme anti nuclear group started by Ralph Nader.
Bringing a leading environmentalist into his inner circle, Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz has selected Kevin Knobloch, longtime president of the Union of Concerned Scientists, to be his chief of staff, DOE confirmed Wednesday.

Moniz announced the appointment in an internal e-mail that said Knobloch’s “deep understanding of energy issues and experience as an outstanding manager will be of incredible value to the department.” He provided no details on Knobloch’s specific responsibilities as chief of staff.

Knobloch, who has been president of the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) since 2003, brings a broad background in energy and national security issues as well as legislative experience gained from six years spent on Capitol Hill in the 1980s as a staffer for former Sen. Tim Wirth (D-Colo.) and Rep. Ted Weiss (D-N.Y.).

While UCS is not among the most vociferous of the nation’s green groups, his appointment appears likely to arouse suspicions among congressional Republicans about Moniz’s carefully cultivated image of moderation on key energy policy questions.

While Moniz has voiced qualified support for expanded natural gas and nuclear development, for example, UCS has joined other green groups in consistently lobbying against fossil fuel and new reactors.

However, Knobloch’s appointment is hardly a surprise given strong support among greens for Obama’s key energy policy goals of expanding renewables and stronger government action to address climate change.

Knobloch’s new job offers a direct conduit for greens into the top levels of DOE and the administration’s energy and environmental policymaking apparatus, especially since Knobloch has been a trusted senior member of the environmental community for years.

    • "We don't have time for a meeting of the flat-Earth society," Obama said on Monday.

His technique is right out of the Saul Alinsky playbook.

      Ridicule the opposition.

      • Bob, President Obama exhibited both "hubristic arrogance" and that he knows "less than nothing" about energy. His hubristic arrogance is based on he is ALWAYS RIGHT plus that when contrary views are presented, the OPPOSING PARTY IS INVISIBLE plus he is SELECTIVELY DEAF. The facts neither support Climate Change/Global Warming nor is carbon dioxide a pollutant.

When one has no opinion on a complex issue, this individual is positioned at zero (0) on the number line. However, when one repeats demonstrably false rhetoric (e.g., Climate Change/Global Warming), this individual's knowledge is "less than nothing" [since the position is to the left of zero (0) on the number line].

While I wouldn't expect an hubristically arrogant (seemingly scientifically illiterate) individual to know that carbon dioxide is essential to life (photosynthesis), it is nonetheless appalling that senior advisors/staff did not attempt to speak with President Obama prior to him embarrassing himself at Georgetown.

This episode says nothing about the 40 to 50% of US electricity/power needs currently filled by coal. There are brave men and women who enter the mines each day to ensure that this natural resource is used to power the US Economy. It is also the height of hypocrisy for President Obama to encourage the export of coal to other nations (e.g., China) where environmental constraints are a fraction of what they are here.

Since the adjective GLOBAL is used to modify the word WARMING, has it not dawned on President Obama and his advisors that this posture does not set a good precedent for the rest of the world (on the off chance that some of the scare mongering is validated)? By tying the US Economy in knots (concurrent with all of the other DC-based mayhem that President Obama is responsible), he will succeed in making the US no different than the other ca. 200 nations/states on the Earth. A true race to the bottom!

It is quite a negative legacy and one which I would not be proud.

    • This is the kind of dd everyone should pay attention to. The dictates and policies of this obama clown is what really steers these company's futures. On the other hand he only has 3.5 years left and will be replaced with someone level-headed and everything will return to normal. A fella getting in here at .33 cents could get rich.
