There is no reason not to hold an MLP in an IRA. Many financial types don't recommend it because they don't understand the tax consequences. I hold a small proportion of them, and manage it so that total UBTI will never exceed $1000 as I don't want to cope with the hassle. If someone doesn't mind the hassle, more power to them.
