2014 new model i8 will feature rear window with Gotilla Glass. Starting price at $136,000. Great growth avenue for Corning in several ways. Light weight for fuel efficiency, acts as a superior sound barrier than conventional auto glass, and has a good chance of being added to driver and passenger windows in future. Also, BMW will be reviewing market data on this for furhter offerings to other models. And dont think other Auto companies wont be looking at every aspect of what BMW is doing to model in to their own high end auto models. Major potential future market for Corning has been underestimated in my opinion. Wall Street is caught up in the history of COrning and is missing valuable clues to the future namely its financial health and shareholder value being created via buy backs and dividend hikes. Finally, the end markets for high end products will be more receptive to higher prices than was the case 5 years ago. Corning is showing results from is R&D spending while others cut those budgets and I feel they are poised for upside surprises.
Watch what is right in front of us all and we will all get a feel for how things are going with COrning -- If BMW i8 sales are strong, if smart glass TV sales are strong -- COrning will see a nice 2014
Potentially great news for this company. You have to sell a lot of smart phones to sell the same amount of glass as in one rear window. Increased volumes creates efficiency which reduce the cost which leads to widespread adoption etc.
Maybe a dumb question but .... Is smart glass TV the same thing as touch screen TV?
smart glass is actually glass that changes tranluscence with light. It has insulating features as well as visual aid by keeping spaces cooler when sun is directly on it as well as adjusting the light emitted -- very efficient glass of the future -- likely will see it in next generation of High End buildings across the globe
