So what is with the crazy price spike late this afternoon? Lots of Sept expiry options on both the call and put side opened too... I'll bet some player with lots of money was moving the stock price around to get those options at a dcsount... maybe a strangle position? Could this be related to the buyout rumors that have been floating around earlier this year?
Looks like a buyout was the reason... options activity was high too which would support this rumor. 18B pounds would be ~30% premium. I say screw em... this deal needs at least 50% applied
@@@@@08/19/2013 | 06:40am US LONDON--U.K. based pharmaceutical company Shire PLC ( Shire PLC) has hired Lazard to beef up its team of advisers amid fears of a 17 billion pound takeover attempt by a big U.S. rival, the Sunday Times reported, without naming sources. It is thought the appointment was prompted by an informal approach earlier this year from Bristol-Myers Squibb Co. ( Bristol-Myers Squibb Co), which was rebuffed, said the Sunday Times. The investment bank has been brought in alongside the existing advisers, Morgan Stanley and Deutsche Bank, to help draw up a range of responses if a formal bid materializes, it said.
