Gusher in Eastern Colorado (Cheyenne County)

Colorado may have a new oil play on the Eastern Plains, given talk of a gusher in Cheyenne County.

The Denver-based Rocky Mountain Oil Journal quotes sources saying that a horizontal well, the Pronghorn State #16-15-48-1H, owned by Chama Oil & Minerals LLC of Midland, Texas, “has reportedly tested up to 2,000 bopd” (barrels of oil per day).

The well is located about 2 miles southeast of Kit Carson, about 40 miles west of the Colorado-Kansas line.

The Journal, founded in 1921, follows the industry in 12 states including the Rocky Mountains, Kansas, Nebraska, and the Dakotas.

Chama Oil & Minerals, which drilled the well, couldn’t be reached for comment Monday.

By comparison, the "Jake" well drilled in 2009 in northern Colorado by Houston-based EOG Resources Inc. (NYSE: EOG) — the well that kicked off Colorado's booming Niobrara play — initially produced about 1,700 barrels of oil per day.

    • Interesting that wells do not target Niobrara. Could this be a MIssissipian play?

"Cheyenne County’s assessor, said Monday that rumors of a “huge well” have been floating through the county for about a month. The rumors were that well required several storage tanks to handle the output, Cullens said.
“We’ve always been an oil and gas county,” Cullens said. “It would be nice to have new production.”
Chama started drilling the Pronghorn well in January, and began drilling on a second well in March in Cheyenne County, according a the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission (COGCC).
The two wells don’t appear to target the Niobrara formation, according to the commission's website."
