World corn, soy production edges higher

January 14 - An expected increase in the 2012 corn production estimate for the U.S. and a larger South American crop have pushed global coarse grain supplies for 2012/13 higher by 2.9 million tons, according to the latest USDA report.

Along with the larger U.S. crop, Paraguay’s production has been revised upward by 1.1 million tons and Brazil’s by 1.0 million tons. In both cases, higher expected yields are being cited as the reason,.

On the soybean side, global production for 2012/13 is expected to hit a 269.4 million tons, up 1.7 million from a year ago. U.S. and Brazil are reporting larger crops, which makes up for an expected shortfall in Argentina, USDA says.

The Argentina soybean crop is projected at 54 million tons, down one million mainly due to lower projected area resulting from excessive moisture throughout much of the central growing area, the report says.
