Intuitive Surgical's robotic surgery system ("Da Vinci") is starting to suffer resistence because of cost. Outcomes no better than manual surgery, based on extensive database.
Costs $100,000 per prostate surgery compared to $25,000 for EDAP's HIFU technology (all in). Some of that expense is sunk, depreciation on the machine. But that's pretty minor.
Da Vinci requires 5-6 person crew compared to 1-2 for HIFU. Needs full blown operating room instead of doctor's office. HIFU outcomes better in terms of quality of life; comparable for cancer recurrence. If cost becomes an even more meaningful issue HIFU could build momentum.
