Reluctant to comment as family member does work for Varain in the Medical Oncology Div. We personally think it is a very solid company - have been with them at the high end for over 20 years. Have experienced some restructuring but R&D aggressive and end-user orientated. Oncology systems best in the market and Varian has considerable market share. Wall Street is favorable to V but V has been around a long time and is not one of those 'sizzle' companies that attract the over-zealous praises of analysts. Hope this makes sense to you. You can always call some Radiation Oncology depts in your area and ask if they have Varian and how they like the equipment.
Insiders view. While Oncology might be looking rosy as the company is spending money to expand this division, semiconductor equipment is the opposite. Not much expansion planned here in a market that demands a lot of R&D. Revenues are down as Asian flu is hitting this group not only on new equipment but in other areas like service and support as customers fabs are running below capacity.
The stock is very thinly traded due to institutional investors owning big chuncks and the company buying back shares to prop up EPS growth rates.
Not the sizzle that other companies like AMAT or NVLS have.
