Right before the bankruptcy I bought some GM preferred. I wound up with some (how many I'm not sure, that's part of the problem here) convertible bonds due 2032. How can I get more information about them, including how many I got for each 100 shs. of preferred I owned?
What were referred to as "preferred" are also known as notes or debentures (convertible), or even bonds. All the same. Your statement should say what you own, the cusip number is what you use to track them. Most currently trading at about 35 cents on the dollar.
I don't know what I own! That's the problem. The entry on the web page for my brokerage account looks like a cusip, but when I plug it into any of several places to look up a cusip, it comes out unknown. What I owned was preferred stock, I think series F. The new things are convertible debentures, due 2032. It's hard to believe that a 20 year GM debenture is selling for as much as 35 cents on the dollar - that seems awfully high for a lot of risk.
