Check out Daniel Tack's Forbes article, his following statements indicate just how serious Z intends to dominate mobile gaming:
"Quite frankly, Solstice Arena does an excellent job at bringing the core elements of the MOBA to a mobile platform."
"Solstice Arena is currently the best MOBA experience available on iOS. It’s fairly impressive to see that Zynga, is bringing some streamlined improvements to a genre that has not historically lent itself to mobile play."
Now that Mattrick has teamed up with Pincus, don't kid yourselves, these guys are determined to win. They have everything going for them including a warchest of cash approaching $2 Bil. No one has asked the question: What did Mattrick see in Z to make him jump ship without a second thought? Please don't say it was the $50 mil, MSFT would have GLADLY given him that and much much more to keep him on board. No my friends, what Mattrick saw in Z was a potentially multi-$billion behemoth with the power to not only dominate all current platforms, but to create new ones and simply TAKE NO PRISONERS!
If you do a search for reviews of Solstice Arena, the game is rated quite well. Could be a nice turning point for ZNGA as they start their game soul-searching in the mobile arena.
Sentiment: Strong Buy
I appreciate your enthusiasm, but Don did not, as you wrote " jump ship without a second thought" - Mark was after him for three months before he was able to convince him to exit MSFT and Dennis 'The Menace' Balmer(as he is know amongst the MSFT insiders). $50M is no doubt a nice inducement to depart - if ZNGA fails, he won't be homeless on the streets looking for his next meal. With the stock having appreciated apx. $700M in market value since the bottom about two weeks ago, - due in large part to the news that he 'jumped ship', Don has already covered his salary/signing bonus/golden parachute/etc.,etc.,etc....'The Menace' is attempting to reconfigure MSFT to conform to the AAPL business model, since MSFT's model has not worked. Balmer should get the boot, and be replaced by a more creative CEO.
Steve would be proud. What does Bill think about the restructuring. Melinda is probably too busy with the Foundation to even care.
Paul of course is on his yacht sailing the Med. As a major MSFT shareholder like Bill,he certainly would like to know what is happening with the company. Bill hangs out with Warren quite a bit so Warren is probably privy.
I love being on a first name basis with these people.
Hey bagg, good post but I personally don't believe Mattrick left Microsoft for freemium online games. Games on any given day are hot the next day they're not, the real reason he left imo, is what everybody at Zynga has been ultra quiet about: Real Money Gaming! I've seen one est. that it's currently a $40 Bil market expected to grow to a staggering $200 Bil market in the next 5 yrs. Z has the unique advantage over everybody else because of the sheer number of eyeballs they bring to the online gaming tables, coupled that with software on steroids and voila! They can instantly grab 10 - 20% of this market, Matttrick knows this probably better than anyone and he has the moxie to get them there, ........and Pincus knows that better than anyone.
Your point on RMG being the main reason for Mattrick signing on makes a ton of sense, now that I think about it, all of the other Z games could be a headfake when all along the sights are set on RMG. I really think Z is doing their best to downplay RMG, when in reality that is the golden grail that Mattrick & co. is focused on. Good post.
