I believe that with a 30% or so stock price decline this year we are currently seeing a lot of tax loss selling. I am tempted to join the crowd but feel that once we get past this period there will be some recovery. A lot does hinge on 4th quarter results and reassurance that dividend will not be cut. FTR isn't going away any time soon and with stock trading close to book how much lower can we go?
70% of your FTR div's are return of capital which lowers your cost basis. If you have held long enough your cost basis will go to zero. So you could have a gain even if you sold at a loss. This reduces selling for tax loss purposes. FTR is best held in a qualified/IRA account or left to estate so the cost basis reverts to time of death
